I Create Better Automations Using These Hidden Principles
Your Smart home automations can be soo much better by applying this simple but elusive principles. I spent over a year observing and creating automations, took all the lessons learned and simplified it to these seven principles called the Smart Home User Experience Heuristics. See the in-depth explanation for each of the Heuristics: www.technithusiast.com/lessons-learned/2024/3/28/smart-home-ux-heuristics #shuxh #smarthome #userexperience #homeautomation #applehomekit #homekit

Aqara M3: What went wrong?
Переглядів 6 тис.Місяць тому
Aqara's Hub M3 is powerful but misleading. With all the features it boasts, they seem to fall short of expectations set by Aqara. The IR Blaster worked but not as expect, 3rd party support was disappointingly limited, and the increased stability from the "Ark Technology" did not work for me no matter how I tried. Despite the defects, this devices is matter enabled and does help unify all Aqara'...

Want to be a lab rat? Go right ahead roll this out. When it finally works - HA and AI is where this is all heading. I guess this is why Microsoft (along with owning ChatGPT) owns github right? Through that Microsoft is using dudes like you. All of us. To be the slaves. Do all the work. Then test the code *we* right into our HA platform. Its us then trialling it in *our* homes...But wait.. Do we own our homes? Oh... no no no. Not in the end. 'cause meanwhile, Microsoft is collecting all the data. Then it's *them* directing what we do. In our very own homes! All this so they eventually control us and the world. But it gets worse. They finally monetise it, with subscriptions and then feeding us crap and services we don't actually want to buy. That's what is *really* scary.
Sounds like an interesting parallel universe 🤔
A humble recommendation: Do not add any background music/sound to the sections where you are talking. It is too loud, muffles your voice, and quite distracting. I stopped watching as the background music never fades away, and stays on throughout the whole video. It's a shame, as I really wanted to learn more about webhooks.
Ah i see you've found my earlier works when I first got started. Perhaps try more recent videos?
@@technithusiast I certainly will. Thank you for all the good work.
I keep getting "node: handle optimized response function : (error) "SyntaxError: Unexpected token ` in JSON at position 91"" With errors in various positions :(
Have you tried this: ua-cam.com/video/J0_mi7U0wCM/v-deo.html

I think this is so awesome!!! I want all of these things in my laundry room!!
Give it a try!
@@technithusiast I am still trying to figure out how to set up home assistant 🤦♀️ maybe one day 🙏
The worst sensor I ever use, it shows ghost all the times, when I back after few days fo2 doesn't work the lights doesn't work completely, I try to reset reset sensor and the lights but doesn't helps. Do NOT buy it, isn't worth.
Have you tried it in different rooms or tried returning it and getting a different one? (im not trying to convince you to get an aqara sensor, i simply want to know the extent of your troubleshooting)
What program are u using to make the telegram, the one with map& algorithms?
NodeRed? Its a stand-alone application that can be used with home assistant to create complex or easy business logic for automations
@@technithusiast Thanks 🙏, keep up the good work
These automations (this is me answering before watching rest of video cos you told me to) aren’t fixing problems, they’re setting explicit scenes that only consider one person’s action in the room. My wife reading a book whilst tv is on next to me is going to get pretty pissed.. Adding passive lighting to a hallway when its dark and motion is detected is stopping an accident. Turning on a bright light at 2am when going to bathroom is waking someone up that doesn’t want to be fully awake. Nuance…
Hey - I bought this hub because it would would allow me to connect it to home assistant (core docker) and add zigbee and matter connectivity. However it won’t bring over and devices. It loaded through homekit - but the aqara door sensor won’t show up and I can’t connect the hub via matter. Did you do anything in particular to get this to work?
Yup had a similar issue. The all show up if you expose items via matter. I have an aqara door lock too that wouldn’t show but i did see it after exposing via matter. The annoying part is that now you get duplicates of all your sensors
Is there a beginners version of this??
Currently no. But I’m working on something to make this stuff easier to take in
It kinda looks like your mouth and the audio is not in sync
Probably. I was still ironing out a lot of kinks in my earlier vids. Hell, I’m still ironing out kinks to this day…
But I hope the content was good 👍🏾

@Technithusiast. Some ideas you might try: since it's a home automation system and there's many people living in the home, you need to make the AI understand it has to process information from the point of view of all the occupants, including animals. You might want to try using a small language model with a large context length so that you could implement some more sophisticated rules. The system needs to know if they're conflicting commands between the occupants, and or other situational variables. It would be interesting if you also had cameras set up surrounding your house so that the house itself would know the external situation. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and I wish you luck.
I love your videos...I still can't my FP2's into HA...I just bought an Aqara hub...and I still can't get them there...frustrating...keep up your good work...
Love the heuristics - are these your invention? Where can we read them in full?
Sure thing! You can see the blog here! www.technithusiast.com/lessons-learned/2024/3/28/smart-home-ux-heuristics
@@technithusiast thank you - didn’t know about your blog
Great analysis - I like your example of a use case that doesn't fit the "All or Nothing" principle. I've tripped across this as well and had to rethink and break down some automations. Why? Because people stop using them is they don't work "as expected". I tend to avoid overloaded automations or ones that have long series of sequential steps. The other issue that I've had to contend with (which may be orthogonal to your model of heuristics) is what I call unknowable state. This occurs when devices can't report back their current state (my "dumb" motorized blinds) or their state is unreliable (looking at you Z-wave dimmers) . I hate anything stateful, but sometimes have to come up with ways to a) capture and retain state, sometimes even through power outages and b) make my automations resilient enough to deal with or recover from ambiguous or unknown state. Wasp in a box on steroids, if that's a thing, with HA assumed to be the authoritative source of truth. Mostly. Again, if the automation is not reliable, no one will use it, no matter how clever I think my automation flow is.
Really well said!! i find the highest praise is the spouse/family members who actually use the automations. As cool as automations are, they have to be just as reliable as their dumb counterpart.
I think RGB lights are better as decorative lights. They aren't very useful for everyday lighting.
+1 i agree!
